Deborah
Deborah and Ian have been living in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil since July, 2001.  It is so very different from their home in Southern Ontario or the U.K., where they are both originally from...Deborah has been absorbing all the vibrant colours and textures of Brazil, and has been busy filling sketchbooks with botanical images.  She has specialized in botanical art for the last 10 years.

Moth Orchid  (Phalaenopsis)
Watercolour & coloured pencil

Since coming to live in Brazil I have become addicted to growing orchids.  They are so exotic and I have many growing in pots in the courtyard of the house that we are renting.

My neighbour has a wall of her garden covered with figs, but she never picks them so they rot and fall down into the tiled corridor beside our house.

Coconuts are sold as thirst quenchers at roadside stands in Brazil.  The man hacks the top off the nut using a machete and makes a small hole to drink the milk out of.

Our gardener once asked me for some sea salt to put around the base of the coconut palms.  He said it was to help them grow but also because they were born by the sea and were lonely for it.

Inside the fruit are little black seeds covered with a creamy custard.  The fruit is expensive to buy, hence the name meaning that it is a fruit only for the rich.
Persimmon (Caqui )
Watercolour

Caqui are very popular fruit and the season for them in Brazil is around early May.  Then they are very cheap and are piled high in the shops and markets.

There are 3 different kinds of caqui we see in Sao Jose, the most common is caqui rama forte, but large caqui fuyu (Japanese caqui) are more expensive but are also popular. Not so well known are the caqui chocolate, they are same size as the rama forte type but they are a yellow orangy colour and taste of chocolate.
